THE LAMU CULTURE

Along the Kenyan coastline is Lamu town one of the oldest town along the east African coastline and only rivaled by Zanzibar in Tanzania. These people of Lamu known as Swahili they are merchants,fishers,boats builders and sailors. The lamu are Muslims who are united during different occasions and even festivals. Weddings-weddings are extremly important affairs in Lamu. They connect families in the area and create a wonderful and joyous mood in the whole community.They are stick dancers known as kirimbuzi on the sea front for men and the public to watch and there are parties and dancers for the women. This is during a weding ceremony Swahili music and poetry are valued art forms in the community and contemporary music sounds like a mixture of Indian and Arabic drum beats.
